Setting long term goals can feel overwhelming, and sometimes we don’t know where to start. In this article, we will cover 5 ways you can get a kickstart in learning the best ways to challenge yourself by setting long term goals, while still taking small steps with the present challenges and goals you still need to complete in order to get there. This article is intended to be a guide and stepping stone in making the choices that are best for you.

 

What are SMART Goals

 

SMART goals are a structured approach to setting, planning, and achieving your goals.

 

By breaking down goals into five essential components—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—the SMART framework offers a clear pathway to move from idea to action. 

 

This is a widely used method for setting goals in all areas from personal development and education to business.

 

Here’s a breakdown of what each component means and why they matter:

 

S: Specific

 

The goal must be clear and specific. A well-defined goal answers questions like:

 

  • What do I want to accomplish?
  • Why is this goal important?
  • Who is involved?
  • Where will it happen?
  • Which resources or limitations are in place?

 

M: Measurable

 

Your goal should include metrics so you can track progress and stay motivated. Quantifying the goal allows you to assess whether you’re on the right track or need to make adjustments. Measurements can be in terms of quantity, frequency, or milestones.

 

A: Achievable

 

Goals should be realistic and attainable within the resources, time, and skills available to you. Setting achievable goals ensures you don’t become discouraged. However, it’s equally important that they’re challenging enough to encourage growth.

 

R: Relevant

 

The goal should align with your broader life objectives, values, and ambitions. A relevant goal matters to you and, ideally, contributes to your larger objectives. This alignment ensures that you stay motivated even when challenges arise.

 

T: Time-bound

 

A SMART goal has a deadline or timeframe to provide focus and a sense of urgency. Deadlines help to prioritize the goal and prevent procrastination, while also giving you a target date for measuring success.

 


Tips to Make Goals a Reality

 

1. Create a Plan

 

The first step in taking on the challenge of setting long term goals for yourself is to create a plan. This can be done by sitting down and journaling and writing down a 5-year plan. 

 

This 5-year plan can be based on where you want to be in life in 5 years. Write down what that main goal is, and then write down your sub goals you have to achieve along the way. Writing each goal down (big or small) is a mentally healthy way to keep track of any challenges you want to overcome.

 

2. Learn

 

Learning is the next important step towards challenging yourself to setting long term goals because the only way to achieve those goals is to learn and grow along the way, and this can be in any area of your life. 

 

One example of this would be to learn a new language. By learning a new language, you are challenging your brain to take on a new skill that is completely foreign. The act of doing this can help you build confidence and teach you that you can take this ability and confidence and apply it to your bigger, long-term goals later. 

 

You never know, learning that new language may even come in handy one day if needed. Learning new skills and going out of our comfort zone is one of the hardest things to do, but the outcome is always rewarding.

 

3. Reflect On Your Progress

 

As you go through each day, each day is one step closer to your big goals you want to achieve. It is crucial that you periodically track your progress along the way and reflect on the little achievements you have made so far. 

 

Even if those little achievements are small, they are still counted for, and they still lead to bigger achievements later on. Give yourself time to ponder and think at the end of each day and go for a walk while you think about how things are progressing. This can help you connect deeper with yourself on a personal level, and this is a good way to understand more about yourself and if there are any minor changes you need to make.

 

4. Maintain a Positive Mindset

 

Maintaining a positive mindset as you track your goals is one of the biggest steps you can take in challenging yourself to reaching your long-term goals. Maintaining a positive attitude along the way is not as easy as it sounds. 

 

It is natural to feel lost and frustrated some days, and contemplating on if you are taking the right shoes for yourself will come naturally, too. However, one way to stay on track is to talk to a mentor, friend or loved one. 

 

Don’t be afraid to open up about what you want to achieve in life. Talking to a trusted friend or loved one can be therapeutic and beneficial to not only you, but to them as well because they will admire you for being vulnerable and will be inspired to challenge themselves as well. 

 

It is important not to be discouraged and it is normal to have bad days but talking to a mentor or a loved one about things you want to achieve and getting their opinion can be helpful. You never know, they might actually have an opinion that you can really apply your goals to.

 

5. Visualize Your Future

 

By visualizing your future as you go through each day and get closer and closer to your long-term goals, it can be a great motivational tool to use to keep everything going on track with a positive mindset. 

 

This can also be done by creating a vision board for yourself to look at every day in the morning when you wake up, and then right before you go to bed at night. The vision board can be a collage of pictures, quotes, and affirmations that help inspire you to challenge yourself to reach your long-term goals. This is especially helpful if you are a visual learner. 

 

Of course, there are other ways to visualize your future too, such as journaling, or just simply talking to a friend or a loved one about your progress, hopes and dreams.

Sometimes, we set goals that we abandon later. Life gets in the way, or we suffer enough setbacks to believe we are on the wrong path. We throw in the towel. 

 

What if we reframe setbacks as transformative experiences on the path to goal achievement? What if we recognized their potential to fortify our determination rather than viewing them as demotivating obstacles?

 

If you are pursuing a significant goal, you will encounter difficulties. Life will inevitably get in the way. When it does, and you suffer a setback, here are some things to remember to keep you focused on your goal. No matter who you are or what your goal is, these strategies can help you stay on track.

 

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger

 

Consider this: a setback can be a powerful teacher if you choose not to give up. It can equip you with valuable insights, such as what strategies don't work. Armed with this knowledge, you can adapt and approach the issue from a new angle. 

 

Furthermore, setbacks can be a catalyst for building resilience. This ability to bounce back after a setback is crucial for achieving significant goals. If you stumble or fall short, take a step back and analyze objectively. You can then adjust your goal to make it more within reach.

Setting Goals in an Uncertain World


Are your goals linked intimately to your strongest beliefs? When you sat down to create a game plan for living your dreams, did you consider your values? If you haven't, the ever-shifting world we live in might leave a bitter taste in your mouth when you strive for your goals instead of the sweet taste of success that comes from aligning your actions with your values.

 

Attach Your Values to Your Most Important Goals

 

Some people value free time highly. They arrange their lives so they have as much time as possible to do what they enjoy rather than what they must. For instance, they might prioritize their hobbies or spend more time with their loved ones. Others value family or friendship above all else, while some chase the almighty dollar as their existence's be-all, end-all motivator.

 

Take some time to review your values. Don't just look at the surface level. Dig deep and uncover the biggest motivators. It's easy to be distracted by what society or marketing messages try to convince you is your best life path. Ensure your values are your own and not dictated to you by someone else.

 

Revisit the Most Unpredictable Circumstances You Have Had to Experience

 

The global financial crisis of 2008 was the largest since the Great Depression. It was triggered by a combination of factors, including the bursting of the United States housing bubble, high-risk lending practices, and the spread of toxic assets. The Great Recession that followed saw a European debt crisis that saw Greece, Portugal, Ireland, and Cyprus require rescue from economic default.

 

While many financial experts had predicted something troubling on the horizon before those devastating monetary collapses, it caught most people by surprise. People abandon their financial goals unless they have some relation to a person's core beliefs and deep-seated values.

 

When Your Goals Mean Something, You Persevere

 

What are your big goals right now? Think about the first two or three things that come to mind. Look at them closely. Are they truly related to your unique and personal values, or are they 'cookie-cutter copies'-of generic goals others have achieved but which may not align with your aspirations?

 

Life is uncertain on its most predictable day and unpredictable much of the time. In the face of such uncertainty, ensure your goals reflect your true values. If not, the motivation to realize them can disappear as circumstances change.

 

One of life's certainties is that you will face uncertainty your entire life. 

 

You can work diligently to control your environment, influences, and experience, but life will inevitably taunt you with unforeseeable challenges. When you base your goals on your most important beliefs, they stand a better chance of surviving the uncertainties the fickle finger of fate will force you to face.

The Tale of the Unfinished Tower


In a lively town by the sea, there was a mason named Paolo who was known for his talent but also for his tendency to avoid responsibility when things went wrong. Paolo was skilled in his craft, and the townspeople admired his beautiful stonework, but many whispered that he was unreliable when projects ran into trouble. Whenever mistakes were made or work was delayed, Paolo would always blame others—the weather, the tools, or the workers under him—never taking responsibility for his own actions.

 

One day, the mayor of the town announced a grand project: a tall lighthouse to guide ships safely into the harbor. It was to be the tallest tower in the region, a symbol of the town’s prosperity and an essential beacon for sailors. The mayor entrusted Paolo with the task of building the lighthouse, knowing that his skill with stone was unmatched. Paolo eagerly accepted, seeing the project as an opportunity to showcase his talents and earn more fame.

 

Work on the lighthouse began, and at first, everything went smoothly. Paolo directed the workers, and the tower began to rise, its stone walls gleaming in the sun. But as the tower grew taller, so did the challenges. The stones became heavier, and the winds at higher elevations made the work more dangerous and difficult.

 

One day, as the workers were hoisting a large stone into place, the pulley system broke, sending the stone crashing to the ground. Several other stones were damaged in the process, and the tower’s progress was delayed. When the mayor came to inspect the site and asked Paolo what had happened, Paolo quickly blamed the workers. “They were careless,” he said. “It wasn’t my fault.”

 

The mayor frowned but accepted Paolo’s explanation, trusting that he would ensure the mistake was corrected.

 

As the weeks went on, more problems arose. The mortar in some sections of the tower began to crack, and Paolo’s measurements for the next level of stones were off, causing a misalignment in the tower’s structure. Each time an issue occurred, Paolo deflected blame. When the mortar cracked, he blamed the supplier for providing poor-quality materials. When the tower’s alignment was off, he blamed the tools, saying they weren’t accurate enough. But never once did Paolo take responsibility for overseeing the work closely or ensuring that everything was done properly.

 

One evening, after another day of delays, Paolo returned to the site alone, frustrated by the problems plaguing the project. As he stood at the base of the unfinished tower, an old sailor approached him. The sailor had lived in the town for many years and had seen many projects come and go. He looked up at the tower and then at Paolo, who appeared lost in thought.

 

“Seems the tower’s been giving you some trouble,” the sailor said.

 

Paolo sighed. “Yes, but it’s not my fault. The workers are careless, the materials are faulty, and the tools aren’t good enough.”

 

The sailor raised an eyebrow. “That may be so,” he said, “but I’ve been watching this project from the docks. It seems to me that when things go wrong, you’re always quick to point the finger at someone else. A good captain takes responsibility for his ship, even when the storm isn’t his fault.”

 

Paolo frowned, unsure of what the sailor was getting at.

 

The sailor continued, “When I’m out at sea and something goes wrong with my ship, I can’t blame the wind or the waves. I have to adjust my sails, make repairs, and guide my crew. If I fail to do that, the ship doesn’t just suffer—it sinks. Accountability isn’t about avoiding blame; it’s about taking responsibility and making things right.”

 

Paolo was silent for a moment, realizing that the sailor was right. He had been so focused on protecting his reputation and avoiding blame that he hadn’t taken responsibility for the problems on the project. If he had been more diligent in overseeing the work, if he had taken the time to fix mistakes rather than blame others, the tower might have been further along—and stronger.

 

The next morning, Paolo returned to the construction site with a new resolve. He gathered the workers and apologized for blaming them for the delays. He took responsibility for the mistakes that had been made and promised to oversee the project more closely from then on. He personally inspected the materials, adjusted the plans to fix the alignment issues, and worked alongside the crew to ensure that everything was done correctly.

 

With Paolo taking accountability for the project, the work improved dramatically. The workers respected him more for admitting his mistakes and working to correct them. Slowly but surely, the lighthouse rose higher and higher until it was finally completed. The tower stood tall and strong, a beacon of light guiding ships safely into the harbor.

 

When the mayor came to inspect the finished lighthouse, he praised Paolo for his hard work and dedication. And though Paolo felt pride in his accomplishment, he knew that the real lesson he had learned was the importance of accountability. By taking responsibility for his actions and guiding the project with care, he had not only completed the lighthouse but also earned the respect of the entire town.

Accountability means taking responsibility for our actions, even when things go wrong. When we own our mistakes and work to correct them, we gain respect, improve ourselves, and ultimately succeed in our endeavors.

The Essential Role of Self-Discipline in Overcoming Obstacles


Life is full of barriers. Sometimes, the impediments you encounter on your journey seem impossible to overcome. Usually, though, there is a solution to life's problems. Make the following considerations when you require discipline to overcome a hardship.

 

Take The First Step

 

Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher in the 6th century BCE. As with most philosophers during this early age of enlightened thinking, he had several views on living that still apply today. Here's a quote credited to him that can help you improve your discipline: "Beginning is half of every action."

 

It's only natural to stop dead when you have a big obstacle in front of you. It makes sense. You have to judge how this impediment to your progress can be overcome. The key is to avoid getting stuck in this assessment process.

 

Discipline means taking action. It's like courage in a lot of ways. You act even though you are uncertain about the outcome. When roadblocks appear without warning, take some time to formulate an action plan. Then act. The key to finishing is starting, so don't let life's obstacles keep you from progressing to a great outcome.

 

Become Your Hero

 

Do you have a favorite movie star? There may be a leader in finance, politics, or some other field that you look up to. You are their biggest fan. One way to develop rock-solid self-confidence is to model that person.

 

What would they do if they were going through the same situation you are encountering? How would they react? Certainly, they would succeed. That's one of the things you respect about them: their ability to reach new levels of achievement reliably. When it's tough to push on, be the person you admire in your mind. This can give you the discipline to keep going.

 

Answer This Simple Question

 

Life gets difficult at times. You've already encountered this natural law. You wouldn't be here now if you weren't a survivor, someone who has overcome difficulties in the past.

 

There have been times you had to practice incredible self-control. Even though you have succeeded in these situations, it might be tough to see yourself getting past some difficulty now. Answer this simple question when self-doubt threatens to keep you from creating the reality you deserve.

 

What am I willing to do to change my life?

 

Will you confidently take a step today to overcome an obstacle when you prefer to wait until tomorrow? Discipline is about choosing to do something you'd rather not do right now to improve your life. Answering that question fills you with the energy and confidence needed to push forward and gives you the first action you need to take to create change.

 

Remember that you can't control everything that happens in your life. The only thing you can control is your response. Choosing not to react when life gets hard will change your situation. Disciplining yourself to take action when obstacles appear is its own reward.

How To Believe In Your Dreams And Make Them Happen

Can you really believe in your dreams? Are they attainable? Do you pursue them actively, every day? If you don’t, then your dreams will only be dreams. They are more like fantasies if you don’t invest in them and act on them. 

 

Think about claiming your dreams and making them happen. This leads like a path to your life’s purpose, and the life you were intended to live. 

 

Here are some valuable steps to believe in your dreams and make them happen:

 

Don’t allow fear to overcome your dreams. 

 

Believing in your personal dreams can be tied up in your fears. Fear can hog-tie even the most noble dreams, so they won’t grow. Fear is sneaky, but so overpowering. 

 

Fear will make you think you can’t make your dreams happen. It makes you feel that you’re not young enough, or smart enough or rich enough, to make them a reality. Why is that? 

 

It’s your ingrained fear of failing that does it. This overpowers any desire or will to try to reach for your dreams. Rather than pursuing your dreams, you believe, falsely, that your dreams can never come true. You’ll never know if you could have succeeded or not. If fear wins you over, your dreams will die. 

 

Identify your dreams.

 

You may have many dreams, and some of them may change, over time. They can only come true if you truly care about them. Work on your dreams now, instead of waiting for the “best” time or situation. 

 

If you have dreams that have not yet come true, pick one now. Dedicate yourself and make it happen. Don’t worry about what other people say, and don’t make any more excuses. Either that, or perhaps this wasn’t a true dream for you from the start. Look for another from your list and go after that dream. 

 

Believe fully in your dreams. 

 

Dreams are not only powerful thoughts. They also push you to do or be something. If you are daring enough to dream, you should also hold the courage to believe in those dreams. Dreams allow you freedom to change fantasy to reality. 

 

Dreams are easier to dream than they are to make happen. If you do something you love and shoot for what you want, this is more satisfactory and simpler than holding dreams in your heart but not acting on them. Take the chance and make a dream happen in your life.  

 

Pursue your dreams. 

 

Believing in your dreams is wonderful, but only if you pursue them. In order to do that, you must:

 

1. Set goals that are realistic. 

 

Set attainable goals, but also challenge yourself to make them happen. Start with smaller goals and work your way through to larger ones. Break dreams into steps that are manageable, and that you’ll be able to complete. 

 

2. Develop a more positive attitude.

 

Believe in yourself and remain positive. Keep your motivation strong, since pursuing dreams may be tough. Surround yourself with family and friends who uphold and support you, to help keep you on the right track. 

 

3. Take definite action.

 

Don’t wait for something to happen – you need to make it happen yourself. Take steps, even if they’re small, towards your dreams. The more you act with purpose, the closer you will be to making your dreams happen. 

 

4. Persevere even if you have setbacks.

 

As with any journey, there are bumps in your path. If you come up against obstacles and they knock you back, get up and move on. When you pursue your dreams, the race is not a sprint but a marathon. Remain focused and don’t give up.
